Prenatal Diagnosis

There are several prenatal tests which are given to most women and some which are given only to women who are at increased risk of having a child with a disability or birth defect. Some of the tests can definitively diagnose a birth defect or disability and other tests only screen for the possibility of a later diagnosis that must be determined by further testing. Whether there is a definite diagnosis or the possibility of a later diagnosis, information on the disability or birth defect and contact with other families who have either experienced a prenatal diagnosis or are raising a child with this diagnosis is very helpful for both emotional support and in making medical decisions.
