Medical Insurance

In addition to insurance that is available through private providers and public resources, sometimes insurance is available specifically for children with disabilities. Review the list below to see the requirements to qualify for this insurance coverage.

Situation Insurance Program
All Children, Middle Income Working Families PeachCare for Kids: Allows income eligible working families to purchase low cost health insurance for any child under age 19. There is no cost for children under age 5. Currently, the cost per month is $10 to $35 for one child and a maximum or $70 for two or more children living in the same household. To learn more about this program.
Child with a Disability, Middle or Higher Income Levels Deeming Waiver: A Medicaid waiver program for children with significant disabilities. This program is designed to provide Medicaid insurance to children who live in families having income that is too high to qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The Deeming Waiver Medicaid can be used as either primary insurance or as secondary insurance when a child is covered under a private insurance plan. To learn more about this program.
Medicaid Recipients who are Eligible for Private Insurance HIPP (Health Insurance Premium Payment): A program where the Department of Medical Assistance (DMA) pays for the cost of your private health insurance premiums. It is available to Medicaid eligible recipients (Medicaid, Medicaid with SSI or Deeming Waiver) if the DMA determines it is more “cost-effective” to pay for private insurance instead of having Medicaid pay all the bills. It can benefit the entire family if a family insurance plan is found to be more cost-effective. To learn more about this program.
All Children, Low Income Level Medicaid with SSI: For families who are income eligible and who have a child with a disability, it is possible for your children to receive monthly SSI (Supplemental Security Income) payments and, along with that, automatically receive Medicaid insurance. To learn more about this program.
All Children, Low Income Level Medicaid without SSI: For families who are income eligible, it is possible for your children to receive medical insurance coverage through Medicaid. This program is available to children up to age 18 whether or not they have a disability. To learn more about this program.
All Children, When Your Income is Too High for Medicaid and You Have a Lot of Medical Bills Medically Needy Spend Down Medicaid: If you have a lot of medical bills, but your income is too high to qualify for “regular” Medicaid, you may be eligible for the Medically Needy program. To learn more about this program.

HIGHLIGHTS

A special needs trust is the only estate planning option that protects assets, enables the beneficiary to receive goods and services from the estate, and still preserves eligibility for government benefits.
