Improving Behavior

The only way to improve behavior is to be consistent. Here are some steps to follow:

Motivate a child who has developed negative behaviors by praising and giving attention to good behaviors.

Steps to decrease negative behaviors:

Ignore a child who is acting inappropriately. Ignoring takes tremendous patience
and time.

Take away privileges or fun activities (t.v., video games) can help an older child reduce negative behaviors.

Set up Timeout in a restricted area for a certain amount of time so the child will not receive any benefit for inappropriate behavior. Make sure the timeout area is not a rewarding environment.

Provide training for appropriate behavior by asking the child to perform a small task and then giving an immediate reward. You could ask the child to “put the toy in the toy box” and respond with praise to the successful outcome. Make your request simple and clear.

Set up a token reward system for certain behaviors that can be turned in for specific, enjoyable rewards. Tokens can be removed for inappropriate behavior. Make sure the behaviors that cause award and deduction of tokens is clear to both you and your child.
