Common Reactions to Grief

1. Denial, moves rapidly into-

2. Anger, perhaps toward professionals “messenger” of bad news·

  • Grief, overwhelming, even if gradual

  • Loss, of expected perfect child, dream life together

  • Bargaining, if only s/he could---, I would do --- anything

  • Fear, of unknown, of future, expect the worse

3. Guilt, over cause of, moves to questions of why/ why/me?

4. Depression, Feelings of isolation, constant sadness

  • Confusion, mental overload

  • Powerlessness, to change, no control

  • Disappointment, in loss of perfect child, challenge to own value

  • Rejection, of child, of spouse, family, of professionals; death wish

5. Acceptance, rather acknowledgement
